Sample Problems

The links below lead to sample questions covering the various named topics. These questions have been selected from exams given over the previous several years. Even though using these questions will be a great aid to your study, there are limitations of which you should be aware.

  • Not all faculty emphasize or even cover the exact same topics. These questions we written by Dr. Mark Sutherland.
  • There are some redundant questions due to material being selected from several year's worth of exams.
  • The material covered in the course changes some from year to year. Therefore there will be questions in the files that are extraneous in some years; likewise there will be material covered in class for which there are no questions.
  • The different faculty who teach the course vary in their use of particular kinds of questions.

I have not included the answers to the questions. I strongly believe that reading questions and then looking at an answer sheet is not a productive way to study. It is much better to work in small groups on these questions, looking up answers to questions that no one can answer. Make sure that you understand the main idea or concept behind the question; memorizing specific answers will not be helpful because the exact questions change every year.

The sample questions are stored as portable document files (PDF). With Acrobat Reader, you can open this files for study at your computer or print them without the need for re-formatting. You can click the icon below to get the Acrobat Reader if it's not already installed on your computer.

If you prefer, you may also look at the sample test questions as Microsoft Word files. These are located in theWORD FILES folder inside the Sample Test folder inside the Extras folder on your CD ROM. The word files are present as large files (all the content of the 6 major divisions below) and as separate small files for each of the subtitles.
