Marine Biology (BIOL 335)

Trip to Belize

“The trip to Belize was one of the most amazing trips I've ever gone on. Not only were the views breathtaking, but getting to be around professors and other students in such an exciting setting allowed me to grow so much closer to them. It was definitely the highlight of my year!”

“The Marine biology trip to Belize was definitely one of the best (and the most fun) experiences that I have had in my time at Hendrix. The opportunity to apply the information that we learned over the semester was such an awesome experience, and I would do it again in a heartbeat!”

"The trip to Belize really allowed me to appreciate biodiversity and see the importance of protecting the world around us. Seeing those booming ecosystems was an unreal experience that will stick with me forever. It was also really cool to form close bonds with your fellow students and teachers that you slaved away with throughout the semester. It was an amazing experience."

“I have always loved sea turtles, and my obsession with Finding Nemo only spurred it on. Lots of other students kept seeing green sea turtles and loggerheads throughout the week, but every time, I had missed them. Finally, on one of our last days, I was able to see three turtles swimming around! This little guy was my favorite because he was very interested in us and didn't try to swim away. I was able to just chill out and watch the beautiful creature live.”
“The Manatee Channel was simultaneously the most exhausting and rewarding experience that I had in Belize. The waves were really high that day and trying to swim against the current seemed impossible. For about five minutes, I was swimming with all of my might and struggling not to move backwards. Finally, I got through the hard waves and was rewarded with a beautiful manatee in the very first lagoon that we looked at. The manatee would swim close to us and check us out, but really he just wanted to float around and look sleepy. His eyes were framed with huge eyelashes, and while looking into them (as corny as it sounds), I felt like I could understand him.”

"Belize was amazing. It literally brought to life everything we had learned about in our marine biology class. Getting to experience and explore one of the world's most precious ecosystems was pretty incredible."

“The photo on the left is of a little pufferfish that we got to play with and look at very closely because one of the snorkel guides caught it to show us. The photo on the right is just an underwater picture, but it is definitely the most gorgeous picture I took on that trip. I'm still amazed at how picturesque everything was!”

"This trip was AMAZING!!!!! It was fun to learn about these organisms in class, but it was even more fun to see them up close and in person! It was also neat to explore and learn the history behind Tikal and the ATM cave."
